Event Description and Donation Plan

 Annual Spring "FUN"d Raiser - March 16th, 2002

The Golden Chain Theatre is opening our 35th season with the Second Annual Corned Beef Cabbage Feed & St. Patrick's Day Celebration!

We would like your business to support us with a donation of a gift.

In 1965, a group of community members decided that Oakhurst needed something to get the tourists driving through town on their way to Yosemite National Park a reason to stop (and spend money) in our mountain village. With the help of the Chamber of Commerce, the "Golden Chain Theatre" was born.

Performances were held at the Oakhurst Community Center, and the theme was - MELODRAMA. The community took immediate pride in the newly-formed troupe, and soon, it was obvious the players were outgrowing their space, and were ready for the next step — they needed their own building. In 1972, the founding board members took a big chance — each put their own houses up as collateral to purchase the Snowline Bowling Alley, and convert it into a theatre. With unparalleled vision, this dedicated group re-vamped the old bowling alley, converted the lanes to an auditorium, updated the Saloon, and opened the doors. In 1999 the final mort-gage payment was made & the current building is owned outright by the theatre.  We thank our founding members and visionaries for laying the groundwork that has become the Golden Chain Theatre.

Moving Forward with New Goals:  The Golden Chain Theatre School of Performing Arts

The millennium brought renewed commitment from the board that as a community theatre, the Golden Chain should begin to open it’s doors to outside organizations and exhibition of other theatre art venues to the community.    In 2001, building renovation and renewal began.  Projects included redecorating the lobby, auditorium and Saloon, replacement of the patron parking lot, installation of a cast parking lot, and culminated with construction of a dance studio which now houses the Patti Law School of Dance.  With the first lesson in the new dance studio, the Golden Chain Theatre School of Performing Arts was born.     That same year, the GCT opened its doors to the Eastern Madera County Chamber of Commerce, to host their “Oakhurst Goes to the Oscars” fundraiser, which benefited the Yosemite High School Music Department.

Annually, the Golden Chain Theatre donates approximately $5,000.00 to local charities and school, in the form of no-charge use of our facility, season tickets, recital space, and monetary donations from shows and fundraisers.  In January of this year, the GCT opened its doors and donated the use of the theatre, our props, sets, paint, utilities and volunteer time to the Mountain Home School Charter’s Shakespeare production.  We also host other community organizations and functions, such as the  Kiwanis, the Elks, the Eastern Stars, and E. Clampus Vitus Grub Gulch Chapter 41/49.

Starting this year, we are raising funds to continue our building renovation, and to expand the GCT School of Performing Arts with plans to install a music room and drama department. Expansion of our School of Performing Arts will allow us even better opportunities to support even more community organizations and theatrical art projects.
